Its a new day

I'm very excited to announce my newest venture...I've started an etsy store!

I decided to turn one of my favorite hobbies into my own little cottage industry and use it to my advantage. For now I wanted to do something that I enjoy and not scramble around trying to find something to fill my time and not be happy doing it. I'm very excited to start this, it's brand new to me and I'll learn as I go but at least I can say everything was made with love and I'm going to be happy doing it; not many people can say the same about their jobs, especially in this economic situation.

So go have a look around and let me know what you think! I'm very proud and excited to have gotten this off the ground, here's hoping it takes me good places! Thanks for any input and spreading the word that I'm up for business and reccommendations.

Thanksgiving and its inspiration

My family is fortunate enough to have a ranch house in the family that is up in Mendocino county, up in the forest, where we spend a lot of holidays. This Thanksgiving we decided to go up there. It's really out of the way, and once you're up there, when it's as cold outside as it is, there isn't a ton to do except stay inside and keep warm telling stories with family, and eating...there's always a lot of eating.


I took along that yellow yarn I bought in San Luis Obispo to knit on the drive and to entertain me while I was up there, and I was done with it the first day we were there. It didn't turn out quite like a beret, but more like a slouchy hat, and I love it, and so did everyone else, the boy even wants one in grey. Since I decided most of this year's gifts would be homemade I started knitting a bunch of gifts for family members, and now I've gone knitting mad. I finished a cowl scarf, very similar to this one here for my sister along with a hat, and a little hat for the baby sister (she's 5) to match ours so she doesn't feel left out...its in pink of course, she won't wear it otherwise. And now I have friends asking for me to knit scarves as gifts for their friends. It appears that people really like what I'm doing, and that's good, it gives me something to do, with purpose.


I found the cutest knitting store here where I live, went in yesterday and left with a bunch of friends and an invitation to their knitting circle on tuesdays, and I just might go.



I took a bunch of pictures on a walk down to the creek behind the house, when my sister and I just couldn't bear sitting in the house telling stories for much longer.

She wore a Rasberry Beret

I learned to knit when I first started college, and liked that I could turn my mind off from all the stresses of school and work but still be productive. Of course, once school really set in, the demands of being a science major took precedence and knitting was shipped off and shoved under my bed.

But I recently started again. I wanted to start knitting for charity, to knit for cancer patients who need to keep warm, but I could only make scarves and what they really need is hats. So I've taught myself how to make a hat (thanks Youtube) and have slowly begun to make my way through knitting one. None of my hats so far have been much of an accomplishment at this point and I look at them more as practice; I'm not giving someone who's battling cancer a shoddy hat. So I have started to make scarves again for now; to teach myself different knitting patterns and then back to hats I will go.

When I was in San Luis Obispo the other weekend I went to this really cute store that had a bunch of awesome scarves but they were kind of expensive for something that looked like I could make it. So off to the closest knitting store I went, which just so happened to be around the corner and bought a bunch of beautiful locally hand dyed yarn. I've had a lot of fun going on websites and finding patterns or watching videos on how to knit certain stitches. And I made a pretty scarf with the green yarn I found there, which I love.


I'm thinking after I finish the scarf I'm making now, I'm going to try to make a hat, with some yellow yarn I got, not just any hat but a beret, meaning I'm going to have to add extra stitches as I go out, I think? It looks hard, but I figured if I could knit that, I could knit a hundred hats for charity (though lets not get ahead of ourselves).


I really want to do this, I always feel like I have really good intentions with projects like this but then life gets in the way and I have a bunch of half assed, half finished things lying around reminding me that I failed them.

Anyone have any suggestions or pattern ideas for a beret?

Here's hoping I keep up with this project, and here's to the yellow beret, though if Prince would have it, it would be Rasberry colored...good song.
